Why consult an endodontist?
Like your dentist, an endodontist has completed 4 or 5 years of university training in dentistry. A further 2 or 3 years’ training is then required to become a specialist in endodontics. The endodontist specializes in pathologies and treatments affecting the inside of the tooth, i.e. the dental pulp. Endodontists are able to identify certain causes of dental pain and carry out the appropriate treatments to remedy them.
During their training, endodontists learn to use and master equipment and instruments such as the operating microscope and 3D imaging to perform root canal treatments with greater precision and predictability. The endodontist limits his or her practice to endodontics, performing only non-surgical or surgical endodontic treatments throughout the clinic day. Most endodontists deal with complex clinical cases that a general dentist would not be able to handle.
You may also be referred to an endodontist to evaluate a tooth with an existing root canal that is presenting a problem. Thanks to the high-resolution 3D scan, the endodontist will be able to diagnose the problem and suggest the most appropriate treatment between root canal retreatment or apical endodontic microsurgery.
