Why root canal therapy?

Following a consultation that usually includes 3D imaging, the endodontist may recommend partial or complete root canal re-treatment of the problem tooth, since it is showing inadequate healing or new infection. As a general rule, retreatment is indicated when the endodontist determines that he or she can predictably improve the root canal treatment previously performed.

What is root canal retreatment?

Root canal therapy involves removing all obturating material that has been placed inside the contaminated roots of the tooth, followed by complete disinfection of the root canal system and, finally, placement of new obturating material.

Endodontic retreatment is usually indicated when the tooth has:

  • Complex canals that were not treated during the first treatment.
  • A restoration or crown that has not been placed within the recommended timeframe, causing recontamination of the initial root canal treatment.
  • Reason to believe that the initial disinfection was inadequate.

Following root canal treatment, it is imperative to consult your dentist promptly in order to receive a new permanent restoration.
